The country of Moldova is located between Romania and Ukraine and is one
of the poorest nations in Europe. In 1992 it introduced a market
economy, resulting in rapid inflation and causing a serious economic
crisis, leaving most of the population below the poverty line. The early
2000s brought the emigration of more than one million Moldovans looking
for work (mostly illegally) in Russia and other countries, leaving
their children behind and creating great risk of mistreatment and human
trafficking. Some children became street kids, some went to the homes of
relatives and some into institutional care. Young Life has been
instrumental in providing these at-risk kids with encouragement through
Young Life clubs and camps by introducing them to the love of Jesus
Christ and offering emotional support and modeling.
